North Iowa sets new season bests at Armstrong

The North Iowa track & field teams had a day of strong performances at Armstrong on Monday, Apr. 20, in the North Union Relays. The Bison came away with wins in five events, including three for the girls and two for the boys.

Lake Mills hosts two golf meets at Rice Lake

The Lake Mills golf teams hosted their first home meet of the season at the Rice Lake Golf & Country Club during a windy afternoon on Monday, Apr. 20. The golfers faced off with Forest City and GHV in a triangular.

Indians play 18 holes at New Hampton and Algona

The Indian golf teams both had a chance to play a full 18-hole round of golf last week, during a girls’ invitational in New Hampton on Thursday and a boys’ tournament in Algona on Saturday.

Lake Mills girls win at Belmond-Klemme

The Lake Mills Bulldogs had a stellar night to claim their first team victory of the season last Friday, Apr. 24 at the Belmond-Klemme girls relays. The girls led by 70 points to take first place among seven teams at the event.

North Iowa Northern Lights Volleyball

Kids in grades 4-6 at North Iowa have been busy playing volleyball tournaments this April as part of Northern Lights Volleyball. Coaches for this year’s program include: Rachel Haisman, Heidi Engelbarts, Elizabeth Carlton, Lindsey Berg, Jesse and Ann Jensen, Jenell Sachs, Megan Holland, Addison Gerber, Tarra Viergutz, Neely Jensen, Maddie Newton, Emma Van Hove, and Sharla Hassebroek.

Forest City golfers win Britt triangular

The Forest City boys posted their best golf scores of the season on Friday, Apr. 24, when they won a triangular at Britt. The Indians scored 144 points to lead West Hancock with 154 and Belmond-Klemme with 159.

Lake Mills and North Iowa boys at the Bronco Relays

The Lake Mills and North Iowa boys’ track and field teams traveled south to Belmond for the Bronco Relays last Tuesday, Apr. 21, where the Bulldogs and the Bison finished in the middle of the pack.

Forest City boys race to second place at Charles City

The Forest City Indians claimed the runner-up spot with well-rounded performances at the Comet Relays in Charles City last Tuesday, Apr. 21.

The Indians won three events, including Colin Thompson in the high jump, Grant Gayther in the 800-meters with a new junior class record, and Jason Lee, Deegan Moore, Peter Wilson, and Aiden Frascht in the shuttle hurdle relay. 

Bulldogs take five medals at North Butler

The Bulldog boys closed out last week at the Kyle Marquard track & field invitational at North Butler High School in Greene on Friday, Apr. 24. Lake Mills had a similar result to Tuesday’s meet in Belmond, as they once again set five personal records while picking up five medals.

Bison golf in two triangulars

The North Iowa Bison golf team had a tough week with two third place finishes in a pair of triangulars. The team traveled to Bancroft on Tuesday, Apr. 21, where the boys played against Bishop Garrigan and North Union. It proved to be an extremely tight contest, with Garrigan and North Union tying with 154 points each, while North Iowa was close behind with 160.

Bechtel sisters will play college basketball together

Sisters Grace and Kate Bechtel are both headed to the University of Wisconsin-Superior to play basketball. The Lake Mills High School seniors signed with the yellowjackets last Wednesday, Apr. 22, with their parents, Chad and Shannyn, and their brother, Emerson, by their side.

Area girls’ teams compete at Lady Cardinal Relays

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura hosted two classes of competition for the Lady Cardinal Relays on Tuesday, Apr. 21, including three teams from Winnebago County. The Forest City and Lake Mills girls competed in Class A, where the Indians won first place and the Bulldogs took third, while the North Iowa girls competed in Class B and placed sixth.

Viergutz’s volleyball career continues at Grand View

Tarra Viergutz will play volleyball with the Grand View Vikings this fall, as she committed to Grand View University during a signing event last Wednesday, Apr. 15. The North Iowa senior plans to study sports management along with business management at Grand View, and she says her goal is to become a volleyball coach and own a jewelry business.

Reynolds breaks record on his way to Drake Relays

Forest City junior Holden Reynolds broke a 28-year-old record track record while competing at Bulldog Relays last Thursday, Apr. 16 in Lake Mills. Reynolds set a new Forest City record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.04, which was good enough to also qualify for the Drake Relays in Des Moines.

North Iowa second in class at Lady Bison Relays

North Iowa High School had a warm and windy day for the annual Lady Bison Relays last Thursday, Apr 16 at the North Iowa athletic complex. Twelve teams competed across two classes, and North Iowa finished second among seven team in Class B.

North Iowa girls open outdoor season at Clarion

The North Iowa Lady Bison finally had the chance to compete in their first outdoor track & field meet of 2026 on Tuesday, Apr. 14 at the Cowgirl Relays in Clarion. Inclement weather over the previous two weeks put the brakes on two previously scheduled meets.
