Porter takes over as Indians’ head coach

Phil Porter is stepping up this fall as the new head coach for the Forest City football team, after serving for three years as assistant coach.

“I feel good about our team,” said Porter. “We’re really pushing the kids, and they’re working hard.”

Lady Bison working hard ahead of volleyball debut

The North Iowa Lady Bison took part in two volleyball camps last week, including their home camp in the North Iowa Gymnasium on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 3-4. The varsity squad also traveled to Johnston last week for a camp August 6-7 that gave them a chance to compete against 4A and 5A schools.

Lake Mills puts on football camp

The Bulldogs had a productive week during their fall high school football camp held August 3-7. The coaching staff, led by Head Coach Brady Kurtz, welcomed about two dozen boys who worked on fundamentals throughout the week, as well as doing some weightlifting and watching film. The team finished the week by doing some community service on Friday, Aug.

North Iowa football scrimmage this Friday, first game next week

The North Iowa football team will hold their annual Gatorade Scrimmage this Friday evening, Aug. 14 at Bison Field, beginning at 7 p.m.

The scrimmage is earlier than usual this year, as the Bison will play a week zero football game next Friday, Aug. 21 when they host GTRA with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Joint cross country camp at North Iowa

North Iowa welcomed a small crew for the final day of its annual middle school/high school cross country camp on Friday, Aug. 7. Head Coach Jonathan Potter says they had a total of 14 kids throughout the week between both grade levels, as the runners get ready for the fall season. Practice began this week for high school, while middle school practice starts on the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 24.

Lake Mills players and coach pick up All-District honors

Three Lake Mills Bulldogs and their assistant coach have been chosen for All-District baseball honors this summer in the Class 1A Central District. Senior Stephen Brandenburg was selected as a First Team utility player, while sophomore Leif Rogne is the First Team third baseman. Senior Mason Gaetzke also received Honorable Mention.

Sunkle takes All-District honors for the Indians

Forest City senior Hunter Sunkle is a First Team All-District player for the 2026 baseball season, earning recognition as a utility player in Class 2A.

Sign up for youth soccer and volleyball in Forest City

Forest City Parks and Recreation is gearing up for its fall youth soccer and youth volleyball programs, and the deadline to sign up is Monday, Aug. 10.

The youth soccer program is open to kids ages 4-11, who will play on Saturday mornings beginning September 12 at the Pammel Park soccer fields. Youth will be split into three age divisions, including 4-5, 6-8, and 9-11.

Lady Bison volleyball gears up with camps

The North Iowa Lady Bison volleyball team will take part in two camps next week, as the girls prepare for the fall sports season. The high school team will take part in a camp at the school in Buffalo Center on Monday through Friday, August 3-5. Then, the returning varsity players will take part in a camp in Johnston on August 6-7 to face some schools the girls don’t normally get to see.

Gruis Ladies Club Tournament Champions

Jackie Richardson is the open division winner of the 2026 Gruis Ladies Club Tournament, which took place Thursday, July 23 at Gruis Recreation Area. Richardson led with a score of 41 during a beautiful, sunny day for the 9-hole tournament.

Indian football camps begin Monday

The Forest City Indians will host football camps for multiple grade levels next week. The high school football camp is scheduled for August 3-10 from 4-7 p.m. each day. Grades 3-6 will have a camp on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 8-10 a.m., and grades 7-8 will also have a camp on August 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

North Iowa cross country camp next week

North Iowa will host a no-cost cross country camp open to every middle or high school boy and girl in the North Iowa school district next Monday through Friday, August 3-7. The camp will meet on the east side of the school in Buffalo Center each day at 8 a.m.

2026 Gruis Junior Golf Tournament

After a rainy morning and a 15-minute late start, it turned out to be a beautiful day for the Gruis Junior Golf Tournament on Monday, July 20. Twenty-three young golfers came out to play and that is exactly what they did – with some great scores for the day. Medals were awarded to the first, second, and third place finishers in each division.

Twenty-seven area athletes are among the stand-out All-Conference players in the Top of Iowa Conference-West this summer for baseball and softball.

Lake Mills suffers narrow defeat at Regionals

The Lake Mills softball team rallied hard in their first-round Regional tournament game on Monday, July 6 at Riceville. The Bulldogs found themselves at a substantial deficit early on, with the Wildcats building a 6-0 lead in the first two innings.
